District info
The Sestiere Dorsoduro is located in the south of Venice, this neighborhood owes its name to the hardness of the subsoil of the area (from the “dorso duro”). Here are the two major museums of the city: the Peggy Guggenheim collection and the Accademia.
Walking through Dorsoduro you will also find a particular place: the Squero di San Trovaso. The squero is the typical shipyard for rowing boats in the city of Venice. The San Trovaso is one of the oldest, dating back to the seventeenth century. It is also one of the few still active.
In Dorsoduro we also find one of the churches most loved by Venetians: the Basilica della Salute. The church is an excellent example of Venetian Baroque architecture, developed by referring to the models of Palladio. Two other noteworthy churches are the Basilica del Redentore and the Church of San Pantalon. The Basilica del Redentore is located on the island of Giudecca.
